Europe Brought to Asian Screens with Cine Europa 27

A still from Long Story Short / Taken from Miso Film

Cine Europa is now in its 27th annual year of sharing the beauty and diversity of European countries through films as they return with a new set of stories to share with Filipino audiences. In partnership with the Delegation of the European Union (EU) to the Philippines, the contemporary films are hand-picked with Alliance Française de Manille, Goethe Institut, Instituto Cervantes, and the Philippine Italian Association to appeal and relate to the world’s current matters.

With Shangri-La Plaza Red Carpet Cinema being the home to Cine Europa, the film festival is set to open on October 18 there once again with the Danish film Long Story Short by May el-Toukhy and Maren Louise Käehne, to be followed by Dangerous Gentlemen by Director Maciej Kawalski from Poland. Starting on October 18 and up until October 27, all films that are part of the lineup will be screening for free but on a first-come first-serve basis and will be available in different locations in the Philippines. Aside from Shangri-La Plaza in Mandaluyong, there are expected screenings at the University of Cordilleras in Baguio, the University of San Agustin in Iloilo, the University of the Philippines in Cebu, and the University of St. La Salle in Bacolod.

In a press conference on October 11, Cine Europa stated that they are in solidarity with Ukraine in their current conflict and in their nomination to be a part of the EU as they welcomed the nation as a guest country for the film festival. With two more films from Ukraine, it adds up to 20 films in total that range in stories and emotions to be felt, from touching dramas to insightful documentaries, as well as nuanced comedies. They also emphasized that they are not trying to imply or bring the cultures of European countries to the Philippines, but rather share the stories that portray Europe’s diversity and hope that the Filipino people will also relate to them because of the moving passion that the Philippines and EU countries share despite the distance.
