A ‘Fantastic’ Wrap-Up: Ngilngig Asian Film Festival 2024 unveils its winners

The 2024 Ngilngig Asian Fantastic Film Festival has marked its ‘fantastic’ conclusion as it revealed its promising roster of winners.
Back in the scene after a two-year hiatus, the festival witnessed a wave of enthusiasm from filmmakers in the Philippines and other countries in Asia. They showcased their creative visions on the screens, merging the horror and the fantastic to capture the 'ngilngig' factor.
The event featured a diverse line-up, presenting 34 short films competing in the Philippine Shorts Category and 23 in the Asian Shorts. It took place over five days, from October 26 to October 30, in its home region, Davao City.
Philippine Shorts
For the Philippine category, ‘Bisan Abo Wala Bilin’ by Kyd Torato took home the Best Ngilngig Philippine Short Award. The film follows a little girl who witnesses the miracle of an ancient tree in their disease-stricken barrio. Lauded for its allegorical storytelling, it recently won the 2nd Best Short Film in the Sinag Maynila 2024 Short Film Category.

Custom artwork will be awarded to the winners of each section. The trophies are made from found objects, a musical box, a DIY portable sound generator by artist Noi Narciso, and Amaran cinema lights from their event partner, Aputure.
