FDCP Presents Film Line-up for Curation of World Cinema
The Film Development Council of the Philippines (FDCP) finally announced on January 11 the section of films that they will screen for their program, “A Curation of World Cinema.”
In a press conference on the first quarter of 2024 FDCP programs, they presented the aims of curating world cinema as a means to “further encourage audiences to return to cinema… and make critically-acclaimed international films available to the Filipino mass audience for a holistic and better film appreciation.” [1]
The first teaser of this new installment of the program was released last December 17, 2024, where an image of an animated cartoon cat looking towards the title of the titular program. The cat in the teaser is from the critically acclaimed 2024 animated film Flow, directed by Gints Zilbalodis. Know more about Flow and the six other films included in the lineup.
Film Line-up
A TRAVELER’S NEEDS (2024) by Hong Sang-soo
Iris, a French woman, is struggling to make ends meet while abroad in Seoul. She then becomes a teacher which allows her to pursue her own personal philosophical interests. The film premiered at the 74th Berlin International Film Festival where it won the Silver Bear Grand Jury Prize.
BIRD (2024) by Andrea Arnold
An enthralling coming-of-age story about 12-year-old Bailey, played by Nykiya Adams, and brother Hunter, played by Barry Keoghan. The film premiered at the 77th Cannes Film Festival and was nominated for the Palme d’Or.
BLACK DOG (2024) by Guan Hu
Lang, after being released from prison, returns to his hometown in the Gobi desert, decides to get the bounty placed on a black stray dog, and is being sought by a vengeful local gangster. The film premiered at the 77th Cannes Film Festival where it won the Un Certain Regard prize.
DAHOMEY (2024) by Mati Diop
This dramatized documentary follows the return of royal artifacts of Dahomey, a West African kingdom. The film premiered at the 74th Berlin International Film Festival, winning the Golden Bear and numerous Best Documentary accolades in different film festivals.
FLOW (2024) by Gints Zilbalodis
Set in a dystopian post-humanity future, a solitary cat finds refuge on a boat with other animals because of a great flood. There they navigate and adapt in search of higher land. The film received wide acclaim, including winning Best Animated Film at the Golden Globe Awards, and New York Film Critics Circle Awards.
THE SEED OF THE SACRED FIG (2024) by Mohammad Rasoulof
Infamous because of Iranian authorities sentencing imprisonment of the film’s director and crew, it follows the story of an investigating judge in a revolutionary court in Tehran, the capital of Iran, as he becomes disillusioned with paranoia because of the nationwide political protests to a point where he distrusts his wife and daughters. The film premiered at the 77th Cannes Film Festival, winning a Special Jury Prize.
YOUNG HEARTS (2024) by Anthony Schatteman
The film follows Elias, a 14-year-old, as he struggles to find self-acceptance, especially after realizing he has fallen in love with Alexander, a new neighbor of the same age. The film has won multiple accolades from various film festivals including the 74th Berlin International Film Festival and the 77th Cannes Film Festival.
